Creativity has the power to inspire confidence, strengthen communities, and help people discover possibilities they may never have imagined.
Established in 2024, the Passionate Dreamers Foundation is rooted in the belief that creative opportunities should not be limited by someone’s background, financial circumstances, or access to resources.
Through creative writing workshops, mentorship, educational initiatives, and community partnerships, we strive to encourage self-expression, strengthen literacy, and help aspiring creators discover their voices.
Our vision extends beyond the written page.
We aspire to develop after-school programs that introduce young people to creative writing, songwriting, acting, and other forms of artistic expression.
Our goal is to provide the guidance, tools, and encouragement that allow participants to develop their own creative projects and share their stories with the world.
Creativity grows stronger when a community invests in each other’s dreams.
02 — THE FIRST SEED
BEFORE THERE WAS A FOUNDATION, THERE WAS A BELIEF.
2015 · Kent State University Upward Bound
Long before the Passionate Dreamers Foundation was established, Dontez X. James believed in giving back to the community that had helped shape his own dreams.
In 2015, he wanted to do something meaningful for the students coming behind him.
Having experienced the encouragement of his hometown and Kent State University’s Upward Bound program, Dontez decided to give back through education.
He contributed $500 toward a scholarship initiative, and Upward Bound collaborated by providing an additional $250 scholarship.
The support reached two students, including a young woman whose $250 scholarship helped cover the cost of her college books.
Years later, she would go on to graduate from college.
For Dontez, the experience represented more than a financial contribution.
It was an opportunity to invest in someone else’s future, just as people in his community had invested in his.
He hoped to continue giving back, but the responsibilities of building his own life and career meant that establishing a foundation would have to wait.
Still, the idea remained.
Over time, what began as a desire to support students would grow into a larger vision for young writers, musicians, actors, and other aspiring creators.
The scholarship was not the beginning of the Passionate Dreamers Foundation as an organization.
It was one of the first seeds of the mission that would eventually bring it to life.
03 — Scholarship Moment

2015 · A scholarship moment that helped shape the vision
In 2015, giving back became personal.
Dontez contributed to a scholarship effort connected to Kent State University’s Upward Bound program, helping support students coming behind him. Upward Bound also partnered in the effort, creating an opportunity to invest directly in a student’s future.
One of those moments is captured here — a reminder that even a small act of support can carry lasting meaning. For Dontez, this was never just about money. It was about encouragement, access, and showing someone that their journey mattered.
The scholarship helped the recipient with college book expenses, and years later, she went on to graduate.
Looking back, this moment stands as one of the earliest real expressions of the mission that would later become the Passionate Dreamers Foundation.

04 — THE VISION BECOMES REAL
WHAT BEGAN AS AN IDEA BECAME A MISSION.
2024 · The establishment of the Passionate Dreamers Foundation
Years after his first scholarship initiative, Dontez X. James found himself returning to a vision that had remained close to his heart: creating opportunities for others.
This time, he wasn’t building that vision alone.
Through a shared love for the arts, Dontez and singer-songwriter and actress Marissa Ford began discussing how they could create something meaningful for aspiring young artists.
Their conversations developed into a larger idea.
What if they could establish an organization where creativity wasn’t simply encouraged, but actively nurtured?
Together, they began outlining the programs they hoped to offer, starting with after-school opportunities centered on creative expression.
Their vision extended to young writers, songwriters, and actors who deserved access to guidance, educational resources, and opportunities to develop their talents.
As the idea began taking shape, Dontez shared it with Jelani Dorsey, a former mentor from his time in Kent State University’s Upward Bound program.
Jelani believed in the vision and became an important part of helping move it forward.
The dream that had once existed only through conversations and plans was becoming something tangible.
In 2024, the Passionate Dreamers Foundation was formally established.
But its creation represented more than the founding of an organization.
It brought together years of personal experience, community encouragement, artistic ambition, and a shared belief that creativity could open doors for others.
What had begun with a desire to give back was growing into a mission that could reach beyond one person, one scholarship, or one community.
The foundation gave their shared vision a name. The community had helped give it purpose.
05 — THE DREAM RETURNED HOME
THE SAME PLACE. A GREATER PURPOSE.

Some places hold more than memories.
For Dontez X. James, Reed Memorial Library in Ravenna, Ohio, was one of those places.
Years earlier, the library had welcomed him for his first book signing, giving a young author an opportunity to share his work with readers in the community that helped shape him.
Now, he was returning with a different purpose.
Through the Passionate Dreamers Foundation, Dontez organized his first creative writing workshop, bringing aspiring young authors together to explore storytelling, imagination, and the possibilities of their own creative voices.
The workshop introduced participants to the foundations of creative writing, giving them practical tools to begin developing characters, building stories, and creating projects of their own.
But the experience went beyond a traditional writing lesson.
Together, Dontez and the participants developed the story that would become Graffiti Dreams, a project demonstrating how an idea could grow through collaboration and creative exploration.
It was an opportunity for young people to see that their imaginations could become something tangible.
The event also included a book signing and an awards presentation recognizing young aspiring authors for their creativity and participation.
For Dontez, returning to Reed Memorial Library carried a meaning that extended beyond the workshop itself.
The same place that had once welcomed him as an author was now welcoming him back as the founder of an organization dedicated to helping others discover their own potential.
The experience reaffirmed something he had begun to recognize throughout his journey.
Writing, performing, mentoring, and community involvement were not separate dreams competing for his attention.
They were different expressions of the same purpose.
He had once entered the library hoping to share his own story.
Now, he was returning to help others begin writing theirs.

Our long-term vision is to bring accessible creative enrichment programs into schools, libraries, and communities, giving aspiring artists opportunities to develop their talents regardless of their circumstances.
The next generation of storytellers is already out there. Our mission is to help them discover what they’re capable of creating.
