From Workshop to Story: Creating Graffiti Dreams

WHERE GRAFFITI DREAMS BEGAN

Some stories begin with one writer sitting alone with an idea. Graffiti Dreams began differently.

Through the Passionate Dreamers Foundation, I had the opportunity to lead a creative writing workshop during the Winter Writing Festival in Ravenna, Ohio. Instead of simply talking about writing, I wanted us to experience the process together.

We were going to build a story.

CREATING TOGETHER

During the workshop, we worked through the same questions every storyteller eventually has to answer: Who is our character? What do they want? What stands in their way? What kind of world are we creating around them?

The goal wasn’t just to teach writing techniques. I wanted the writers in the room to see that an idea can start small and, through imagination, collaboration, and commitment, become something real.

That creative process planted the seeds for what would eventually become Graffiti Dreams.

FROM AN IDEA TO GRAFFITI DREAMS

The story continued growing after the workshop.

Graffiti Dreams follows Wyatt Jones, a graffiti artist whose life changes after an accident leaves him paralyzed. As Wyatt learns to navigate his new reality, his relationship with art changes too—leading him toward adaptive graffiti, new relationships, and a different understanding of what it means to create.

What makes the project especially meaningful to me is knowing where it started: in a room filled with people willing to imagine something together.

WHY PASSIONATE DREAMERS EXISTS

Experiences like this are at the heart of the Passionate Dreamers Foundation.

I started writing when I was young, and I know what having a creative outlet can mean when life around you feels uncertain. Now I have the opportunity to create spaces where other young writers can discover their voices, develop their ideas, and see that their creativity can become something bigger.

The Winter Writing Festival wasn’t simply about teaching people how to write.

It was about showing them what can happen when someone believes an idea is worth developing.

And in this case, that idea became Graffiti Dreams.
